Growing With The Seasons

This piece was part of an assignment in my "Time" class. We had several prompts to choose from and I chose time within animal and human cycles. How time affects us similarly and differently. I thought about indoor fish and outdoor fish and how their environment determines their lifespans and growth. It is supposed to be a part of a diptych with is why in that first photo theres a little guy but this post is going to focus on the larger piece.

I went through several stages with this piece. The central figure changed, the color palette shifted just slightly. I kept layering watered down gesso, sprayed a bunch of water to cause the paint and gesso to drop and even wiped some of it away which caused this cool masking effect. I continued to draw on with chalk pastel and sprayed water on it in some areas around the figure. If I didn't like how distinct those drawing marks showed then I would wipe it away and paint over it. I continued this process over and over.

My mindset through out this process was that I started with some form of concept and plan but wasn't quit sure where it was going and I led with that uncertainty. There were many times where I just had to step away and come back and look at it with fresh eyes. I rotated it so many time to see something new or feel something new. It was such a freeing experience and a start to a new practice that I am currently using.
